A brief history of the hoodie

The modern, fashionable promotional hoodie has come a long way since its functional early days.

An invention of Champion Knitwear & Sportswear, it was originally intended as an outdoor workwear garment for construction employees and labourers in the cold New York winters of the 1920s and 1930s.

Champion is now a part of Hanes Brands and the current range of Hanes promotional hoodies, which includes organic cotton hoodies, is available right here at Pier32.

Of course, hooded garments can be traced back to times long before the early 20th Century - to the monks of medieval Europe in fact.

Coming back to more recent times though, the modern hooded sweatshirt really took hold in the fashionable youth market in the 1970s, particularly amongst followers of the rapidly-growing hip-hop movement.

By the 1990s printed hoodies and embroidered hoodies were ubiquitous at universities and fashion retailers across the UK as students and teenagers wanted to make it clear that they were associated with their colleges, clubs, teams and so on.
